  • Lights out for Lakers as North powers away

    Date: 2019.01.21 | Category: 南京夜网 | Response: 0

An irresistible second quarter from North Ballarat City has seen the reigning premiers romp to a mouth-watering preliminary finalagainst Redan next week.
    Nanjing Night Net

Lake Wendouree could only watch on as the reigning premiers piled on 8.5 to threebehinds in the second term, led by four goals for the quarter from Ayden George in a best on ground performance.

Laker’s players struggled to get their hands on the ball, let alone use it effectively, as a swarm of City players descended upon every contest for the term with mesmerizing consistency.

The match began as a tight struggle, against each other as well as a howling cross breeze which saw skill levels down and scoring tough, although North gained the ascendancy through good early work from midfielders Jarrod Edwards and Jason McNamara and held a 13-point lead at the first change.

From there it was only a matter of how far for City though as their class and tenacity at the contest saw them put the game to bed. Such was their dominance for the quarter that it took a Tyler George 50m penalty on the wing halfway through the term for the Lakers to enter their own third of the field.

To their creditWendouree showed much more fight after the main break, but a run of eight shots on goal in a row in the third quarter only yielded 2.5 and one out on the full, not nearly enough to give themselves a chance in the last term.

The last quarter saw only three goals scored as North looked to next week and the Lakers pondered what might have been in a season that showed plenty of promise.

Ayden George dominated for most of the match and finished with four goals, while McNamara, Edwards and Tyler George were also standoutsin a cliched ‘team effort’, where ten players could be named in the best and a few would still count themselvesunlucky.

For Lake Wendouree the returning Tyler Blake was serviceable along with Andrew Pitson while Tom Carey booted two goals, but it would be a stretch to find any other Laker who won their position.

North come out of the 17.11 (113) to 5.14 (44) win with only a couple of injury concerns –Ben Hurley was concussed in the second quarter while Sam Hooper, who booted two majors in the match, spent most of the last quarter on the bench in the hands of trainers and was seen icing his hand with five minutes to go in the game.

City now face Redan in a preliminary final next week only a fortnight after being on the receiving end of a 66-point loss to the minor premiers.

Not that dad Simon and sons Lachlan and Bailey were newcomers to the event.

“It’s actually our third stampede,” Mr Callaghan said.

“Last year Lachlan and I did the 10km run but we decided on the 5.5km one this year,” he said.

While there had not been any special preparations, the hockey season had kept the Callaghans in good shape ahead of the event.

Mr Callaghan said the stampede was a great thing for the city, and it was also a good social catch-up as competitors whizzed by their friends, or were whizzed by.

“We’re lucky to have this event, it’s so popular, a big crowd, you can go out there and run early and then spend the rest of the day doing Father’s Day stuff,” Mr Callaghan said.

He said the family would probably take part in next year’s event as well.
